State of the Union Address: Trump's flurry of claims and accusations
US President Donald Trump delivers the State of the Union address at the Capitol in Washington, February 24, 2026.US President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address from the House of Representatives Chamber of the Capitol building in Washington on Wednesday. However, in this important speech, he made various true and false claims and allegations as usual.
This is Donald Trump's first State of the Union address of his second term. As per tradition, he delivered this address in a joint session of the Senate, the upper house of the US Congress, and the House of Representatives, the lower house.
When Trump began his speech, his supporters started chanting "USA". Here are some important points from this speech:
Trump claimed, “Today our borders are secure. The country’s momentum is back. Inflation is falling. Incomes are growing faster. The economy is growing stronger than ever before.” He added, “Our enemies are now afraid. Our military and police are stronger. America’s standing in the world is once again high.”
Trump emphasized his decision to close the country’s borders to asylum seekers. However, he did not mention a program to deport immigrants on a large scale. His program has sparked political controversy.
Trump told US lawmakers he favors “legal” immigration. Although Washington recently suspended immigrant visas for 75 countries.
The US president has also claimed credit for a dramatic drop in crime rates across the country. But experts say the issue is complicated. According to them, crime rates increased during the Covid pandemic and have been trending downward since then.
Supreme Court ruling 'unfortunate'
There is ongoing discussion and criticism not only in the United States but also around the world about Trump's retaliatory trade tariffs on various countries. Among them, the US Supreme Court recently declared a large part of these tariffs 'illegal'.
Referring to this, Trump said in his speech that the recent Supreme Court ruling declaring a large part of his tariff policy illegal is 'unfortunate'. He said, 'This ruling came just four days ago. This is a very unfortunate decision.'
President Trump also said that the trade tariffs will be maintained through other legal provisions. This will not require Congressional approval.
Venezuela's Oil
The issue of getting oil from the Latin American country Venezuela was also raised in Trump's speech. He clearly stated, "We have received more than 80 million barrels of oil from our new friend and partner Venezuela."
Earlier this year, US special forces carried out a military operation in Caracas and took Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife to New York. Delcy Rodriguez then took over as the country's interim president. She is currently running the country by assisting the Trump administration.
Claim to stop eight wars
Trump has previously claimed to have stopped eight wars in the world since coming to power for his second term. This time, the US president reiterated that claim in his 'State of the Union' address.
Among them, he presented the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip in Palestine as his success before lawmakers. He said, 'There is a very small war going on in Gaza now. It is almost over.' It is worth noting that during this fragile ceasefire, Palestinians are often losing their lives in Israeli attacks in Gaza.
Trump said that all the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas have been released due to the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.
Iran's nuclear program 'totally destroyed'
Last year, during the Iran-Israel war, the United States also attacked some of Iran's nuclear facilities. Referring to that, Trump said in his speech that Iran's nuclear program has been 'totally destroyed'.
Trump's statement completely contradicted that of his own Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff. Earlier this week, Witkoff said that Iran was "about a week" away from developing a nuclear weapon.
AI Data Center Topic
Trump said that big tech companies are building large, power-hungry AI (artificial intelligence) data centers. He said that these tech companies will be required to meet their own electricity needs.
“We are telling big tech companies that they have to meet their own electricity needs,” Trump said.
