How Modi's India has adopted the 'Israeli model' against Muslims
Sandeep Chakraborty, the then Indian Consul General in New York, was caught on camera at a private event in November 2019, urging New Delhi to adopt the “Israeli model” in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Millions of people in Kashmir were already living under a brutal military blockade and a complete blackout. The Hindu majority government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Hindu nationalist BJP leader, had stripped the region of its semi-autonomous status months before Sandeep’s speech in 2019.
The Modi government had imprisoned thousands of people, including political leaders from the region. Even Kashmiri leaders known to be pro-India were detained.
The senior Indian diplomat, based in New York, was discussing Israel's illegal settlement of the occupied Palestinian territories. He was raising the issue in the context of the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in 1989. Thousands of Kashmiri Hindus were forced to flee their homeland after an armed rebellion against Indian rule broke out in the Himalayan region.
"It happened in the Middle East. If the Israelis can do it, we can too," Sandeep said at the event. He added that the Modi government was "determined" to do it.
Six years later, Sandeep Chakraborty's words ring truer than ever. As Modi prepares for his second visit to Israel starting today, February 25, it is clear that the two countries are not just bound by friendship, trade and military partnerships. According to analysts, they have also become inextricably linked to certain models of governance.
Analysts say that since Modi's government came to power, India has openly embraced Israel, abandoning its long-standing support for the Palestinians. According to them, New Delhi has imported several elements of Israel's security, oppression and administrative system over the Palestinians. Since Modi came to power in 2014, he has been implementing them in his domestic policy.
