When announcing Khamenei's passing, an Iranian TV host breaks down in tears.
A tearful presenter on Iran's state media announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He read out a statement in Persian from Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
The statement described Ayatollah Khamenei as a mountain-like stalwart in preserving Islamic thought, a spiritual consciousness, a compassionate, firm-minded guardian, a leader and imam of Muslims.
The statement added that Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei had been martyred for his tireless struggle throughout his life, upholding the dignity of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint Israeli-US airstrike on Saturday. Iran's Supreme National Security Council said Khamenei was martyred while working in his office early this morning.
The council's statement was read out on Iranian state television channels.
Iran has declared 40 days of national mourning and 7 days of public holidays starting Sunday following the death of the Supreme Leader.
