USA Beats Mexico as Korea, DR, and Venezuela Clinch World Baseball Classic Quarterfinal Spots ⚾🇺🇸
Team USA Beats Mexico 5–3 as WBC 2026 Heats Up
The 2026 World Baseball Classic delivered one of its biggest matchups Monday as Team USA defeated Mexico 5–3 in a tightly contested game. Both teams entered the matchup undefeated at 2–0 in Pool B, but the Americans secured the win to improve to 3–0 in the tournament.
Despite Mexico’s strong challenge, the United States held control late in the game to seal the victory. Team USA will now face Italy on Tuesday in their final Pool B game.
South Korea Reaches Quarterfinals
Earlier Monday, South Korea defeated Australia 7–2, earning a place in the quarterfinals from Pool C. The win left South Korea with a 2–2 record, tied with both Australia and Chinese Taipei. However, South Korea advanced thanks to the run-quotient tiebreaker, with their seventh run against Australia proving decisive.
Meanwhile, Japan — led by superstar Shohei Ohtani — secured its quarterfinal spot on Sunday after a narrow 4–3 victory over Australia.
USA Chasing Second WBC Title
The World Baseball Classic is now in its sixth edition, with Japan entering the tournament as the defending champion after defeating Team USA 3–2 in the 2023 final.
Team USA has won the tournament once before in 2017 and is aiming for a second championship with a star-studded roster featuring 22 MLB All-Stars, the most of any team in the competition.
Some of the biggest names representing the United States include Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes, and Cal Raleigh, making the Americans one of the tournament favorites.
