Australia's infrastructure history is about to enter a breathtaking new chapter. A proposed high-speed rail project from Sydney to Newcastle would include the construction of the longest rail tunnel in the world. The 194-kilometer route will be underground for around 60% of its length.
The project's concept plans for a continuous tunnel that is 65 kilometers long, exceeding the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, which is 57 kilometers long and the longest rail tunnel in the world. The present two-and-a-half-hour trip from Sydney to Newcastle will only take 60 minutes thanks to this cutting-edge subterranean tunnel, which will allow trains to go up to 320 kilometers at top speed.
The project has been referred to be a "important undertaking" for Australia by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. An estimated 93 billion Australian dollars, or more than 799 thousand crore taka in Bangladeshi currency, will be spent on this enormous project. To begin the project, 660 million Australian dollars, or roughly 5626 crore taka, have already been set aside.
This tunnel and rail project is anticipated to significantly increase housing and jobs in Sydney's northern region in addition to transforming the city's transportation system.
"The news of the world's longest rail tunnel in Sydney is a subject of tremendous pride for us," stated Borhan Khan Limon, an expatriate from Sydney, regarding this historic achievement. In addition to making travel simpler, it will demonstrate Australia's prowess in cutting-edge engineering on a global scale.
